How Linen is different from other modding tools

Linen is a desktop IDE for Minecraft Java mods and server plugins. Here it is beside the tools modders already use, honestly: where Linen is different, where the others are better today, and when to choose them instead.

Facts about other tools come from their own pages, checked on . Numbers in brackets are the sources at the bottom.

What makes Linen different

  • It knows your version. New mod sets up Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt and Legacy Fabric mods and Paper, Spigot, Bukkit and Purpur plugins for any version from 1.12.2 to 26.x, and installs the Java each version needs.
  • It does the boring files. Add to your mod writes a block or item with its model, texture, loot and name the way your loader and version want them, and the Assets page shows what each one still lacks.
  • It talks in plain words. The game log marks your mod's lines, Crash Doctor says which mod and which line crashed and what to change, and Teach me explains Minecraft's names where you read them.
  • It's made for modding only. Home, Code, Run and Assets instead of every option for every kind of Java project.
  • AI without slop, if you want it. Claude Code on your own plan, set up for your exact mod, planning in steps and checked on every edit. Every feature works without it.

Where the others are better today

  • Maturity. IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, Minecraft Development and MCreator have been used by modders for years. Linen is in private beta.
  • Platforms. They run on Windows, macOS and Linux. Linen's beta runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 only.
  • Open source and free. They are free and open source with no paid edition. Linen Free covers every Minecraft version, but Linen's power tools need Pro.
  • Making without code. MCreator lets you make a mod without writing code. Linen expects you to work with code, and helps you with it.
  • Models. Blockbench is the tool for models and textures; Linen opens your models in it rather than replacing it.

Version 1 is only the beginning

Linen is at its first version, and where it can take modding is wide open. Being built and designed now: moving a mod to a new Minecraft version with Linen listing what broke and fixing the renames, fixing a bug once across every version of a mod, a companion that links the running game to your code, a mixin studio, and releasing to the mod sites in one step. These are plans, not features yet; the features page lists what Linen does today.

Questions

How is Linen different from other Minecraft modding tools?
Linen is made only for Minecraft mods and plugins. It sets up a mod for any loader and version with the right Java, writes the asset files the way that version wants them, runs the game and explains crashes in plain words. Other tools are either general Java IDEs with a plugin, a visual mod maker, or a model editor.
How does Linen compare to other Minecraft modding tools?
Linen is a desktop IDE where you write Java, with tools that set up, run and check your mod. MinecraftDev adds Minecraft support to IntelliJ IDEA; MCreator builds mods without code through its interface and Blockly procedures. Each page here says what the other tool does better and when to choose it instead.
How are these comparisons checked?
Every fact about another tool comes from its own pages or its vendor's: listings, repositories, release notes and docs. Each one is linked with the date we read it (3 November 2026). What we couldn't check is left out. Tell us at support@linenide.com if something has changed.
